It supplies WordPress containers, MyKinsta management, Cloudflare-powered CDN and edge caching, security controls, backups, staging, analytics, migrations, and support. Customers choose site/install capacity and usage plans rather than managing an underlying VPS.
Cloudways manages servers from supported cloud infrastructure providers. Agencies choose location and server size, deploy multiple applications, and control scaling with more visibility into the server. 2026 pricing changes
Kinsta has offered visit-based and bandwidth-based plan structures, with current eligibility and legacy treatment varying. In March 2026, Kinsta announced a move toward visitor-based pricing for new arrangements while preserving certain bandwidth options for existing clients. Its documentation still explains comparing visits and server bandwidth in MyKinsta.
Under documented plans, visit overages can be $0.50 per 1,000 visits, server bandwidth overages $0.50 per GB, and CDN overages $0.05 per GB. Confirm the current plan offered; Kinsta’s product packaging changed during 2026.
Cloudways traditionally prices by server resources and provider, with separate costs possible for backups, support, CDN, email, and add-ons. Cloudways Autonomous now applies transparent autoscaling charges when additional infrastructure is used during high traffic.
For both, use a written quote rather than an old comparison table.
Portfolio economics
Kinsta plans limit WordPress installs, visits or server bandwidth, storage, CDN bandwidth, and backup retention. These shared allowances can be simple for an agency: add sites until one of the limits becomes binding.
Cloudways lets several applications share a server’s CPU, RAM, storage, and transfer. This can produce excellent margins for small, efficient sites. It can also create noisy-neighbor effects within the agency’s own server. One runaway WooCommerce import may slow unrelated clients.

Cloudways performance depends on chosen provider, region, server size, application stack, caching, and optional edge/CDN services. A well-configured Cloudways server can be fast, but the agency owns more decisions.
Benchmark cached and uncached paths. For each representative site, measure p95 time to first byte, cache hit ratio, admin response, error rate, PHP concurrency, database performance, and peak load. Do not compare a Cloudways origin with Kinsta edge cache enabled and call the result a server test.
Scaling
Kinsta handles underlying infrastructure within the plan, while the customer upgrades for sustained usage or requests a custom arrangement. Sites generally remain online during ordinary overage, with charges applying according to terms.
Cloudways servers can be vertically scaled under provider-specific constraints. Downsizing may be harder than upgrading, and disk scaling can be irreversible. Autonomous offers autoscaling for supported workloads with usage charges.
Agencies need a capacity process: alerts at defined thresholds, monthly review, client approval rules, and a margin on burst costs. “Autoscaling” without budget alerts can protect uptime and destroy project profitability.

Test the full client lifecycle:

It also suits high-value clients willing to pay for a managed platform and clear usage model. Verify visit/CDN treatment for bot-heavy or media-heavy sites.
When Cloudways wins
Choose Cloudways when technical staff want to select providers and regions, tune server capacity, consolidate suitable sites, and preserve more control over performance economics. It can be advantageous for an agency productizing hosting and monitoring resources closely.
It also fits applications whose traffic does not map comfortably to visit-based pricing. Include every add-on and staff hour in the comparison.
Migration decision
Inventory six months of visits, bandwidth, storage, CPU, memory, workers, cache ratio, and incidents. Group sites by dynamic load and business risk. Request current quotes and model a 2x peak.
Pilot two representative sites on each platform: one cache-heavy marketing site and one dynamic store or membership site. Run the same load, plugins, PHP version, and regions. Test restore and support before moving the portfolio.
Verdict
Kinsta is the better default for agencies that want WordPress hosting to be standardized and low-friction. Cloudways is better for technically mature agencies that want infrastructure flexibility and can turn server management into margin.
